About Us

Rutherford Technology High School is one of a unique group of NSW public schools called Technology High Schools. As one of three such schools in the Hunter Valley, we foster a problem solving approach to learning utilising the full range of technologies. Each of the 8 Key Learning Areas has a technology hub of 15 PC’s. The school also has three computer laboratories, a multi-media laboratory and an air-conditioned sound recording studio. Our highly acclaimed students achieve at school, regional, state and national levels in the skilled, innovative and creative use of technology in learning.

Rutherford Technology High School is a co-educational, comprehensive community school, catering for both city and rural students. Our highly qualified and experienced staff are committed to:

At RTHS we actively promote a sound values framework of ethical behaviour, respect, integrity and responsibility. 

We have high expectations of our students and insist they practice good citizenship, display positive attitudes and demonstrate high standards of behaviour.  

These qualities are developed through strong pastoral care, student welfare and discipline programs . Emphasis is placed upon personal responsibility for behaviour and respect for the rights of others.

We strive for best practice in teaching and learning through collegial professional development in teaching teams, action research projects, and reflective data analysis to inform our teaching and learning programs.
 
Regular communication with parents regarding all aspects of student progress is a feature of our school. In particular the investment parents and carers have in their student’s education is protected by effective monitoring of student academic progress .

RTHS is a welcoming and friendly school that values partnerships with parents and the wider community . Our parent community plays an active and vital role in both the formulation and support of the school’s policies through the Parents and Citizens Association, School Improvement Team, School Council and community meetings.

Students access a quality, balanced curriculum with a strong academic focus on the core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science and HSIE with an extensive range of challenging and interesting elective subjects well supported, by state of the art technology. Effective literacy and numeracy programs, support for students with learning difficulties and enrichment programs for Gifted and Talented students operate at the school.

A comprehensive range of individual  programs and support is offered to ensure the social, emotional, intellectual and physical development of our students.  The curriculum is supported by excellent resources, facilities and programs. These include:

  • Academic and vocational courses.
  • TAFE Certificate courses as part of the HSC.
  • Nationally accredited VET subjects for Year 11 and 12 including work placement.
