20 students from Year 9 attended the Maitland Try a Trade event, organised by the combined Rotary clubs in Maitland and held at Maitland Showground at the end of September. Some 26 trades were showcased, including welding, floristry, horticulture, electronics, vehicle painting and animal care. The idea of the day was for students to try their hand at a range of trades to get hands-on experience that would help them in career selection and subject choice for their senior years.
This is the first time that this event has been held in Maitland, with students from all high schools in the area invited to participate.
Rutherford Technology High School students who attended were all in agreement that this was a great way to try out a range of trades and to get a real feel for what a trade career would involve.
